Salmon Fish Bone Soup, 2 recipes in 1 pot

Salmon Fish is well know for Omega 3 Fatty Acid, hence I thought of using Salmon Fish Bone to make nutritious soup for my little one. After simmering the soup for 1 to 2 hours. I ended with a pot of fishy and very oily soup. Lesson learnt, fatty fish like Salmon is not suitable for prolong simmering. After a few tries, I figured out how to get the best out of it.

#1 Little One's Soup + #2 Our Soup = 2 recipes in 1 pot.
I simply prepare a standard soup base that can be shared with my little one without the need to compromise in taste or ingredients. You can add-on any of your favourite ingredients to create your personal bowl of sumptuous soup. Below photo was taken based on what's in my fridge.
Ingredients for Salmon Fish Soup Base:
  • 1 handful Dried Seaweed (Soak and cut into small pieces)
  • 1 stock Spring Onions (Only the green parts)
  • 1 Tomatoes (Cut into quarters)
  • 1 packet Salmon Fish Bones (Refer to my previous Salmon Fish Bones Recipe)
"This is the soup base which I am sharing with my little one."

Seasoning:

  • 2 tbsp Miso Paste (Add 1 tbsp to test for saltness before adding 2nd tbsp)
  • 1 tbsp Japanese Soya Sauce (Optional)
"To be add into soup pot only after serving my little one's portion. I do not add seasoning to my little one's soup until she reached 24 months"

Add-on Ingredients:
  • Salmon Fish (Cut into slices, remove bones with a tweezer)
  • Chicken (Slices/Cubes. *Optional: marinate with a pinch of salt, pepper and corn flour)
  • Tofu (Choose Tofu for Soup/Steamboat. Cut into cubes)
  • Mushrooms (Enoki/ Bunashimeji/ White Button, diced or cut into half)
  • Wong Bok (Add to soup pot earlier to get a softer texture)
  • Sweet Corn (Cut into 1 inch length, easier for little one to grip)
  • Carrots (Cut into flower shape with a cutter to delight my little one)
  • Broccoli (Cut into small florets)
  • Cauliflower (Cut into small florets)
  • Phuay Leng Vegetables (Cut into shorter length)
  • Prawns (Devein without removing shell, may not be suitable for little one below 18 months)
  • Scallops (Wash in rinse in salt water, may not be suitable for little one below 24 months)
"Above are some of my suggested ingredients which are suitable to be add-on to Salmon Fish Bone Soup Base. Depending on their ability to chew, some ingredients may not be suitable for your little one."

Step 1:
In your soup pot, add in about 1.5L of water. Allow water to boil before adding in Seaweed, Spring Onion and Tomatoes. Simmer for about 30 minutes. Meantime, prepare to Air-Fried Salmon Fish Bones. (Refer to my previous Salmon Fish Bones Recipe)
Step 2:
Add in Salmon Fish Bone and continue to simmer for another 10 minutes.
Tips:
I am using a pressure cooker. It only takes 5 minutes and 1 minute for Step 1 and Step 2 respectively.
Step 3:
For safety reasons, sieve the soup to remove bone. Transfer a portion of soup to another pot. Add-on fresh ingredients which are suitable for my little one and continue to simmer until all ingredients are cooked. Without adding salt or seasoning, the soup is yummy for my little one's tongue palate.

#1 Little One's Soup is ready!

"Do not follow my example! I did not sieve the soup, cos she loves the bone. She is able to handle bone very well"
Step 4:
Add-on fresh ingredients and continue to simmer until all ingredients are cooked. Add 2 tbsp of Japanese Soya Sauce and Miso Paste.

#2 Our Soup is ready!
Caution!
Do not offer fish bone to your little one unless you are certain that she is able to handle it well. I gave Salmon Fish Bone to my little one under close supervision of 2 adults. She loves it! She is able to handle bone with care.

  1. Hi Jon, Thanks for sharing. Now take your pseudoscience paleo bs and shove it back to the paleo shithole it came from. Paleo has no scientific basis and it just a random bunch of ideas based on some 1960s concept of what we imagine paleolithic humans ate. Which is completely wrong. So shove it.
